Public Menorah on Minnesota Ave. Vandalized
With great sorrow, we would like to inform the public that the menorah on Minnesota Ave. was vandalized immediately after the holiday of Chanukah. The Happy Chanukah sign was cracked, the menorah was knocked over, wires torn, and the battery adapter stolen. A police report was filed and local law enforcement are investigating. Anyone that may have some information are asked to come forward. There are no further threats to the community. We are very committed that we will not allow this to disturb our Chanukah celebrations or outreach in the future. May we only share good tidings.
Menorahs are a symbol of religious freedom, fighting darkness with light, and sparking joy and pride in the hearts of all Jews and non Jews that passed by and were inspired by its message. An attack on the menorah is a attack on our Jewish identity and the inclusive message the Public Menorah represents.
Rabbi Mendel Alperowitz's message to the community: “It is difficult for me to fathom why anyone would engage in such acts, and I know I’m not alone. I have seen our Sioux Falls community unite to support and encourage one another. There is tremendous good in the hearts of those who live, learn and work in our city. We cannot allow the misguided and hateful acts of a few to stand unchallenged and affect our work. This will increase our determination to place additional menorahs, next year."
